Okay, so I saw this crossword clue, “you guys stink,” and I was like, “Alright, let’s do this.” I’m not a pro at crosswords or anything, but I enjoy a good challenge every now and then.
First, I stared at the clue for a good minute. “You guys stink”… it’s gotta be something informal, right? And probably something short, since it’s early in the week.
My Thought Process
- Considered synonyms for “stink”: “reek”, “smell bad”, Nope, too literal.
- Thought about slang: Hmm, could be something like “you all are bad”.
- Then, I remembered those NYT crosswords love a bit of wordplay. Maybe it’s not about actual smell?
I went through a few possibilities in my head, plugging in letters I already had from other words. Nothing seemed to fit. I almost gave up, thinking it might be some obscure phrase I’d never heard of.
Then, it hit me! It could be making fun of spelling.”You guys” as plural form. So I can try something like “ye”.
I typed it in, and bam! It fit perfectly. Sometimes, you just gotta think outside the box, or in this case, inside the little crossword squares!
