Well, let me tell ya, back in the old days when I was still watchin’ that wrasslin’ on the TV, we didn’t have all these fancy rules and big ol’ lists of words you couldn’t say. But now, oh lord, WWE has gone and made a whole list of “banned words.” Yep, you heard me right—banned words! And I ain’t talkin’ about words you’d use to curse at the TV when your favorite wrestler gets knocked out, no sir! These are the words Vince McMahon don’t want anyone usin’ on WWE programs. You might be wonderin’, “What in the world could they ban words for?” Well, let me tell ya, it’s all about making wrasslin’ more of a show than a sport, that’s what it is.
Now, they say there’s more than 30 words on this list. Some of ’em you’d probably never guess. Like, for example, the word “wrestling.” Can you believe that? A whole big company like WWE, and they don’t even want you to say “wrestling.” Instead, they wanna call it “sports entertainment,” which is just a fancy way of sayin’ it’s a mix of sport and drama. I reckon they think if they stop callin’ it “wrestling,” it’ll sound more like a Hollywood movie or somethin’. But me, I just call it like I see it.
And then there’s “belt” and “strap.” You might be thinkin’, “What’s wrong with that?” Well, WWE don’t want anyone callin’ the championship a “belt.” They say it’s a “championship title.” Makes ya wonder if they’re just makin’ stuff up as they go along, don’t it? Guess they think the word “belt” don’t sound fancy enough for all them big stars parading around the ring. I reckon they want everything to be bigger than life itself.
Then, there’s some other strange ones like “choke” and “head shot.” I don’t know, but I’ve seen plenty of folks get choked out in the ring and get a good ol’ whack to the head. But apparently, them words don’t sit well with WWE’s big bosses. Maybe they’re worried it’ll make the show look too violent or dangerous, but let me tell ya, it’s always been part of the game. If you’re watchin’ wrestling, you know what you’re in for, right?
Some other words on the banned list include “kill,” “jobber,” and “trauma.” Now, I know what you’re thinkin’, “Ain’t nobody talkin’ about actually killin’ anyone in the ring!” But in WWE, they wanna make sure nobody gets the wrong idea. “Jobber,” now that’s an interesting one. It’s what they call a wrestler who always loses. Back in the day, we’d say they was just a “loser,” but I reckon “jobber” sounds more professional. But apparently, WWE don’t like it, so they told ’em to leave it out. And don’t even get me started on “trauma.” Seems like the word’s just too harsh for their delicate sensibilities. Guess they don’t want people thinkin’ someone’s gonna get seriously hurt.
And then, there’s all these words that have to do with the behind-the-scenes stuff. “Kayfabe” is one of ‘em. I don’t know if you ever heard of that word, but back in the day, we used to talk about how everything in wrestling was “kayfabe,” meaning it was all a big act. But WWE don’t want folks rememberin’ that it’s all scripted. They want people to think it’s real, like it’s all goin’ down for real. They even banned words like “house show” and “card”—I reckon ‘cause it reminds folks that the matches ain’t always part of the big televised events.
But it ain’t just the words you can’t say that make this whole thing funny. There’s also certain catchphrases they won’t let the wrestlers use. You remember when “Yeet” got real popular, right? Some wrestler named Jey Uso started sayin’ it, and next thing you know, WWE’s all over it. But turns out, some independent wrestler had used the word first, so they had to stop usin’ it. I reckon if you ain’t careful, you might end up losin’ your catchphrase to some other fella.
All these rules and restrictions make you wonder, don’t it? I mean, what happened to just lettin’ the wrestlers do their thing and say what they want? But I suppose it’s all about makin’ sure everything stays “clean” and “family-friendly.” You know, they don’t want anyone watchin’ who might get the wrong idea about what’s happenin’ in the ring. WWE’s always been a little extra about that kinda stuff, always puttin’ on a show. You don’t just watch wrestling, you watch an entertainment spectacle.
So, if you’re ever watchin’ WWE and wonder why they don’t say certain things or why certain words are banned, now you know! It’s all part of their big ol’ plan to make wrestling seem like more of a grand show than a sport. Whether you like it or not, they’re stickin’ to it. And I guess, if you ask me, it just ain’t the same as it was when I used to watch it back in the day.
