Alright, let’s talk about how long a typical high school baseball game goes on for. I remember back when I was in high school, I played shortstop for our team, the “Wildcats.” Man, those were the days!
So, I was curious about how many innings we usually played. I did a bit of digging, you know, just poking around the internet to see what I could find. Most places said that high school games are usually seven innings long. It makes sense, right? Keeps the games to a decent length, usually around two to three hours. Perfect for fitting in between classes, homework, and all that teenage stuff.
- Seven Innings: That’s the magic number. Both teams get to bat and field for seven innings each.
- Two Halves: Each inning is split into two parts – the top and the bottom. The visiting team bats in the top half, and the home team bats in the bottom half.
- Shorter Games: Unlike the pros who play nine innings, seven innings keep things moving. I guess they figured we had better things to do than spend all day on the field!
I found out that these games can be longer if the teams are tied after seven innings. The game goes to extra innings until there is a winner. It is not like some other sports. There are no ties in baseball. One team has to come out of an inning with the lead.
Another interesting tidbit I stumbled upon was about extra innings. It’s not like professional baseball where they can go on forever. High school games have limits on extra innings, probably to prevent us from collapsing from exhaustion out there! Plus, schools have schedules to keep.
One last thing that caught my eye was a comparison to Major League Baseball. Apparently, after the whole COVID-19 mess delayed the start of their season, they experimented with seven-inning games for doubleheaders. That’s gotta put some extra pressure on the pitchers, huh?
Anyway, that’s the gist of what I learned about high school baseball innings. It brought back some good memories of my time on the field. Ah, to be young again!
