Alright, let’s gab about them golf sticks, the ones they call “drivers,” from back in 2016. Folks were all a-flutter about ’em, ya know. The Year of the Driver, they called it. Sounded fancy, but all I cared about was whacking that little ball a good long way. Heard tell there were a whole bunch of new ones that year.
Now, I ain’t no expert, mind you. Just an old gal who likes to swing a club now and then. But I heard some fellas talking down at the feed store, and they were going on and on about this TaylorMade M1 460 driver. Said it was the “winningest” driver, whatever that means. Sounded like it won a lot of medals, like those fellas do at the Olympics. Gold medals, even! Guess it musta been pretty good, huh? If it could help me hit the ball straighter, I’d be happy as a clam.
- Lots of talk about adjustability. You could fiddle with the weights and whatnot to make the ball go this way or that way. Too complicated for me, I reckon. I just want to swing and hit!
- And forgiveness! That’s a big word they used. Means even if you don’t hit it perfect, the ball still goes pretty far. That’s what I need, that’s for sure. My swing ain’t what it used to be, you know.
They had all sorts of other drivers too, back in ’16. Callaway, Ping, Titleist… Names, names, names. Hard to keep ’em all straight. But that TaylorMade, that one seemed to stick out. Probably ’cause it won all them medals. Folks always like the winner, don’t they?
I remember seeing some pictures of those drivers in the magazines at the grocery store. Shiny things, they were. All different colors and shapes. Some had big heads, some had little heads. I reckon the big heads were for folks who wanted to hit it far, and the little heads were for folks who wanted to be more accurate. Me? I always wanted to hit it far. The further the better, I always say.
But it ain’t just the stick, you know. It’s the fella swinging it, too. You can have the fanciest driver in the world, but if you don’t know how to swing it, it ain’t gonna do you much good. That’s what my old pappy used to say. He wasn’t much for fancy gadgets, just a good ol’ swing. He could hit a ball a mile, he could. And he never had one of them fancy adjustable drivers.
Now, this here TSR2 driver, they say it’s a real forgiving one, too. From this company called Titleist. Good for folks like me who ain’t got the best swing, ya know. Even if you hit it a little wonky, it still goes pretty straight and far. That’s what they say, anyway. I ain’t tried it myself, mind you.
Looking back, 2016 seemed like a big year for drivers. Lots of choices, lots of fancy talk. But in the end, it all comes down to finding a stick that feels good in your hands and hitting the ball solid. That’s what I think, anyway. And maybe having a little bit of luck on your side, too. ‘Cause golf, well, it’s a funny game. Sometimes you hit it perfect, and sometimes…well, sometimes you just gotta laugh it off and try again.
So, if you’re looking for a driver from 2016, I reckon you got plenty to choose from. Just remember, find one that suits your swing and don’t get too caught up in all the fancy talk. And most importantly, have fun out there! That’s what it’s all about, ain’t it? Just getting out there and enjoying the fresh air and whacking that little ball.
