Well, let me tell ya, the Big Ten ain’t just about football or basketball. It’s a big ol’ conference with a lot of teams, and it just got bigger! Back in the day, folks mighta known the Big Ten for just the ten teams, but now, things have changed. As of 2024, they’ve got a whopping 18 teams. Yep, you heard me right, 18! That’s a lot more than just the old crew that used to be around when I was young. So, let’s take a little walk through all these teams, and I’ll tell you who’s in the Big Ten now, and who’s coming in.
The Original Teams
Now, the Big Ten started out with 10 teams, as the name suggests. Back in the day, they had schools like Michigan, Ohio State, and Wisconsin. You’d always hear about them on the radio and TV. These are schools that have been in the conference for a long time, and they’ve been winning big games for decades. Some of the original teams include:
- Michigan
- Ohio State
- Wisconsin
- Penn State
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Minnesota
- Northwestern
- Michigan State
These teams were the backbone of the Big Ten for a long time, and folks knew ‘em well. Back then, when you talked about the Big Ten, it was all about these schools. But as time went on, things started to change. Some schools got a little too big, and they wanted to get in on the action too!
The New Additions
Now, hold on tight, ‘cause here’s where it gets interesting. In 2014, the Big Ten invited Rutgers and Maryland to join. These schools weren’t in the heartland like the others, but they brought some new flavor to the conference. Rutgers added a little bit of East Coast flair, and Maryland gave ‘em some presence down South. The Big Ten was starting to look a lot bigger by now, but they weren’t done yet!
The Big 18
As of 2024, the Big Ten has expanded even more. Now, I know it’s called the Big Ten, but it sure don’t feel that way anymore. The Big Ten has added a whole bunch of new teams, and the list now includes:
- USC
- UCLA
- Oregon
- Washington
That’s right, the Big Ten reached all the way out to the West Coast to bring in USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington! These schools were part of the Pac-12 before, and now they’re switching over to the Big Ten for the 2024 season. Now, why would they do that? Well, the Pac-12 wasn’t what it used to be, and these teams were lookin’ for a change. The Big Ten’s got the money, the exposure, and the competition they wanted.
These additions really shake things up. Now, when you think about the Big Ten, you got teams all the way from the East Coast to the West Coast. They’ve got teams that are big on research and have tons of students, with many of the schools enrolling more than 30,000 students. That’s a whole lotta folks! And with all these schools, the Big Ten has become one of the most powerful conferences in college sports.
Changes in 2024
In 2024, the Big Ten is doin’ away with its old divisions. Before, they used to have two divisions called Legends and Leaders, but now they’re just gonna play it straight, no divisions. That means all these teams are gonna play each other more evenly, and it’s gonna be even more exciting. No more splitting the teams up into two groups. Now, it’s just gonna be one big ol’ conference with 18 teams all fighting for the championship!
What’s Next?
Well, we’ll see what happens next, won’t we? The Big Ten is growing bigger and bigger, and it don’t look like it’s stoppin’ anytime soon. Who knows, maybe one day they’ll have 20 teams, or maybe even more! With the way things are goin’, it’s hard to say, but one thing’s for sure: the Big Ten is here to stay, and it’s only gonna get more competitive as time goes on.
So, that’s the scoop on the Big Ten. From its humble beginnings with just 10 teams to now 18 teams spread across the whole country, it’s been a big ol’ ride. If you’re a fan of college sports, you’d better be payin’ attention, ‘cause the Big Ten is more exciting than ever!
