His daddy, Earl, and his mama, Kultida, they named him something else. They called him Eldrick. Eldrick Tont Woods. Can you believe it? Eldrick. Starts with an “E” just like his daddy’s name, Earl. Smart, huh? And that “Tont”, it’s a name from Thailand. That’s where his mama’s from, you see. They from other side of world.
But everyone calls him Tiger. Always have. Where’d that come from? Well, his daddy, Earl, he was in the Army. A soldier, you know. And he had a friend, another soldier from Vietnam. They called him Tiger too, so that’s what Earl called his boy.
Why They Call Him Tiger?
See, his daddy, Earl, was a big shot in the Army. Lieutenant Colonel, that’s what they called him. And this friend of his, Vuong Dang Phong, he was a brave one too, I reckon. Earl called him Tiger. So when little Eldrick came along, Earl, he wanted to remember his friend. So, Tiger it was.
This boy, Tiger, he grew up in a place called Cypress, in California. That’s a long way from Thailand, let me tell you. Grew up hitting that little white ball. Got real good at it, too. Best in the world, some say.
He Sure Can Play Golf
He’s won so many of them games. Tournaments, they call ’em. Big fancy ones. PGA Tour, that’s a big one. He’s won more of them than most folks can count. He won 70 tournaments, they say. And 14 of them big, big ones. They call them major championships. Big deal, you know?
