Okay, so I got curious the other day about what the guys playing in the CFL actually make. You watch the games, see the hits, and wonder, are they pulling down big bucks like in the NFL, or is it different? I decided to do a little digging myself to figure it out.

First thing I did was just a basic search online. Typed something like “cfl player salary” into the search bar. Got a whole bunch of results, naturally. Some articles popped up, a few forum discussions maybe. It was a bit all over the place initially. Some numbers seemed really high, others surprisingly low.
So, I thought, okay, need to get more specific. I started searching for things like “minimum salary cfl” and “average cfl contract value”. That started giving me clearer picture. I saw mentions of a collective bargaining agreement, or CBA, which usually sets the minimum pay.
Finding the Numbers
From what I could piece together, it looks like the absolute minimum a player can make per year, like a rookie just starting, is somewhere around $70,000 Canadian dollars. Maybe it’s $75,000 now, these things change with new agreements, but it’s in that ballpark. That was a pretty consistent number I kept seeing.
But that’s just the minimum, right? What about the average guy? That’s harder to nail down precisely. I found sources saying the average salary floats somewhere between, say, $80,000 and maybe up over $100,000 CAD. It really depends who you count and how you calculate it.
Here’s what I gathered affects the pay:

- Experience: Veterans usually get paid more than rookies. Makes sense.
- Position: Quarterbacks, especially the starting ones, are typically the highest paid guys on the team. Just like in most football leagues.
- Performance & Status: Star players, guys who are faces of the franchise, obviously command higher salaries. Bonuses for performance, like making the all-star team or hitting certain stats, also kick in.
- The Salary Cap: This was a big one I learned about. Each team has a total amount they can spend on player salaries. This cap forces teams to make choices; they can’t just pay everyone huge amounts. It keeps things competitive, I guess. For 2024, I saw the cap mentioned as being around $5.5 million CAD per team, roughly.
So, while some top quarterbacks might earn hundreds of thousands, maybe even pushing half a million or more when you include bonuses and housing allowances (which I saw mentioned sometimes), a lot of the players, especially younger guys or those playing less critical positions, are closer to that minimum or just above it.
It’s definitely not NFL money for the most part, that much was clear from my searching. But it’s a living, especially for the established players. It was interesting peeling back the layers on that. Just started with a simple question and ended up learning about salary caps and minimums and all that stuff. Quite the rabbit hole for an afternoon!
