My Little Experiment Watching Wesley Bryan
So, I got a bit hooked watching golf lately, and I remember tracking Wesley Bryan during the Rocket Mortgage Classic a while back. It wasn’t anything super serious, just keeping an eye on how he was doing. You know, he’s got that interesting style.

I started by just checking the scores online each day of the tournament. Didn’t use any fancy apps, just pulled up the leaderboard whenever I had a moment. Wanted to see if he’d make the cut, maybe make a run.
Following His Rounds
It was kind of up and down, like golf usually is, right? But what really caught my eye wasn’t just the score. I started watching some video clips and highlights from the Rocket Mortgage event specifically focused on his shots.
Bryan’s known for those creative, sometimes unconventional shots, especially around the greens. I saw this one chip he hit during the tournament – it wasn’t straightforward. He was in a tricky spot, maybe short-sided, and had to get the ball up and down real quick. It looked pretty slick on TV.
Trying it Myself (Spoiler: Harder Than It Looks)
That got me thinking. Looked fun. Looked doable on camera. So, the next time I was at the practice green, I decided to give it a go. Found a spot that kinda mimicked where he was.

Here’s what I tried:
- Opened the clubface way up.
- Tried different ball positions in my stance.
- Focused on hitting it with a sort of glancing blow.
Let me tell you, it did not go like it did for Wesley at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Skulled a few across the green. Flubbed a couple that barely moved. It’s amazing how easy those pros make incredibly difficult shots look, especially under pressure.
Spent maybe 20 minutes just on that one type of shot. Didn’t master it, not even close. But it was interesting trying to break down what he might have been doing. Gave me a new appreciation for the skill involved. Watching him, and others, at the Rocket Mortgage Classic felt a bit different after actually trying (and failing) to copy just one little shot.
Anyway, that was my little adventure trying to replicate a pro shot. Fun experiment, but I think I’ll stick to my standard chips for now!
