Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here Senior Open thing. It’s a big golf show, ya know, for old fellas. Not just any old fellas, mind you, but them that used to whack them balls real good when they were younger.
Now, they call it the U.S. Senior Open sometimes, and other times it’s just the Senior Open Championship. Don’t matter much, I reckon. It’s all the same thing – a bunch of old guys tryin’ to show they still got it.
They gotta be at least 50 years old, these fellas. Can you imagine? Fifty years old and still chasin’ that little white ball around! My old man couldn’t even get out of his chair at fifty, let alone swing a golf club. But these fellas, they’re different. They say some of ‘em even got a “Handicap Index” that ain’t higher than 2.4. Sounds fancy, don’t it? Means they’re pretty darn good, I guess.
This year, or maybe it was last year, I can’t rightly remember, they had it at a place called The Broadmoor. That’s in Colorado Springs, they tell me. Fancy place, I bet. All them rich folks with their fancy golf carts and shiny shoes. They had it in June, I think. Or maybe it was July. See, I told ya I can’t remember everything.
- One time, this fella, Richard Bland, he won it. Shot a 66, they said. That’s real good, ain’t it? He had to wait ‘til Monday morning though, ‘cause the rain came and messed things up. Poor fella, probably had to eat a cold supper that night.
- Another time, they had it at Sunningdale Golf Club. That’s over in Europe somewhere, I heard. This ain’t just some small-time thing, ya see. It’s a big deal, this Senior Open. They even call it a “Major Championship.” Sounds important, right?
They got all sorts of stuff goin’ on at these tournaments. Scoring, of course. That’s how they tell who’s winnin’. And tee times. That’s when them fellas start hittin’ them balls. And you can even buy tickets to go watch ‘em. Lord knows why you’d wanna do that, but some folks like it, I guess. They even show the highlights on TV, if you’re into that sort of thing.
I seen some of it on the TV once, when my grandson was over. He likes golf, that boy. Me, I don’t get it. Seems like a whole lotta walkin’ for nothin’. But them old fellas, they seem to enjoy it. And they’re good at it too, gotta give ‘em that. They hit that ball a country mile sometimes. Makes ya wonder how they do it at their age.
So, that’s the Senior Open in a nutshell. A bunch of old guys hittin’ golf balls. It’s more than that, I know, but that’s all I can make of it. They got their scores and their tee times and their fancy golf clubs. And they’re all tryin’ to win that there championship. Good for them, I say. Keeps ‘em out of trouble, at least.
2024 or was it 2025? Anyways they keep havin’ this thing every year, so I guess it must be important. And it ain’t just for Americans neither. They got fellas from all over playin’ in it. Even from that Europe place, I told you about. So next time you hear about the Senior Open, you’ll know a little somethin’ about it. It’s for old fellas who can still swing a golf club, and it’s a pretty big deal, apparently.
And let me tell you somethin’ else. These fellas, they ain’t just playin’ for fun. They’re playin’ for money too. Big money, I heard. Enough to buy a whole lotta cows, that’s for sure. So it ain’t just a game to them. It’s their job, I guess. Even when they’re old enough to be sittin’ on the porch drinkin’ lemonade.
But you know, good for them. Keeps ‘em active, keeps ‘em goin’. And it gives us somethin’ to watch on TV, even if we don’t understand it all. So here’s to them old fellas and their Senior Open. May they keep hittin’ them balls for many years to come.
