Okay, so I’ve been messing around with putters lately, trying to find one that really clicks. I stumbled upon this “Stingray” putter design, and I gotta say, it’s pretty interesting. So, here’s how my little experiment went down.

Getting Started
First, I did some digging. I wanted to know what the deal was with this Stingray shape. From what I gathered, it’s all about that weight distribution. They push a lot of the weight to the back, which is supposed to help with, you know, not twisting the putter face when you hit the ball. Sounded good in theory, so I decided to give it a shot.
Building My Own(kind of)
I’m not exactly a club builder, I just play for fun, so I didn’t actually build a putter from scratch. Instead, I found a used putter with a somewhat similar shape, a mallet putter which has big head. It wasn’t a perfect Stingray, but it had that wider back end. I figured it was close enough for a test run.
The Practice Green
Next, I took my “Frankenstein” putter to the practice green. I spent a good hour just hitting putts from different distances. My main focus was on feel and consistency. Did it feel weird? Was I pushing or pulling putts more than usual?
- Short Putts (3-5 feet): I noticed I was making these a bit more consistently. It felt like the putter head stayed more stable through the stroke.
- Medium Putts (10-15 feet): This is where things got interesting. The heavier back end seemed to help me get a smoother roll. I wasn’t hitting them as hard, but the ball was still getting to the hole.
- Long putts(20+):Honestly, it is hard to tell, I mean, a new putter won’t suddenly make my long putt a piece of cake, but the heavier feel of the putter definitely helps a bit.
My conclusion
I didn’t do any scientific testing or anything, but based on my little backyard experiment, I think there’s something to this Stingray design, especially the similar mallet putter. It seems to help with stability and getting a good roll, particularly on those shorter and mid-range putts. But it’s not magical to improve my long putt.
Would I recommend it? Yeah, I think it’s worth a try if you’re struggling with consistency. It might not be a miracle cure, but it could help you sink a few more putts. And that’s always a good thing, right?
