Okay, so a few buddies and I got together last weekend to play some golf. We’re not pros or anything, just a bunch of guys who like to swing the sticks every now and then. This time, we tried out a new format called a “shamble.” Heard of it? I hadn’t, but it sounded interesting, so we gave it a shot.
Here’s how it went down:
- We all teed off like usual, each taking our best shot.
- Then, we picked the best drive out of the four of us. It was pretty obvious whose ball was gonna be chosen, one guy just smashed it.
- From that spot where the best drive landed, we each played our own ball for the rest of the hole.
- So, you get the advantage of using the best drive, but then it’s all on you to finish it out.
My thoughts on the whole thing:
- It was a blast! Definitely a fun change-up from our usual stroke play.
- It took some of the pressure off, especially on the tee shot. Knowing you had three other guys to potentially bail you out was nice.
- But it still had that competitive element since you were playing your own ball from the best drive spot.
- We had a mix of skill levels in our group, and this format seemed to work well for everyone.
Scoring:
We played it pretty loose with the scoring. We figured out our handicaps, multiplied each by 0.8, and then added up our team handicap. We subtracted that from our total score, and that was that. Didn’t get too hung up on the exact numbers, it was more about having fun.
Overall, I’d definitely recommend giving a shamble a try. It’s a great way to mix things up and enjoy a round of golf with your friends, no matter their skill level. We’re already planning our next shamble outing. If you get a chance to try it, let me know how it goes!
