Okay, so I needed to get rid of some junk. Like, a LOT of junk. We’re talking about an old mattress, a broken TV, some busted furniture… the works. I live near San Rafael, so I figured the San Rafael dump was the way to go. But, I had NO idea what the fees were, and I didn’t want any nasty surprises.

First, I grabbed my phone and did a quick search. Just typed in “San Rafael dump fees”. Found some info, but it wasn’t super clear. It mentioned different rates for residents and non-residents, and something about different types of waste. Ugh.
My Trip to the Dump
So, I decided to just load up my truck and head over there. I figured I’d ask about the fees in person. It’s always best to just talk to someone, right?
When I got there, I pulled up to the entrance booth. A friendly guy came out, and I asked him about the fees. He asked me if I was a resident, and I showed him my driver’s license. Good thing I brought that!
He then explained the fee structure. It’s basically by weight, but there are minimum fees. He also pointed out that certain things, like appliances and electronics, have extra fees. Makes sense.
- Regular trash: Seemed pretty reasonable, based on weight.
- Mattress: There was an extra charge for that.
- TV: Yep, another extra charge.
- Furniture: Just went by weight, thankfully.
After getting the rundown, I drove onto the scale. They weighed my truck with all the junk. Then, I drove around to the different dumping areas. The guys working there were super helpful, telling me where to put each type of waste.

Once I was all unloaded, I drove back onto the scale. They weighed my truck again, and then I went back to the booth to pay. The final cost was a bit more than I’d hoped, but not too bad. I mean, getting rid of all that junk was totally worth it!
The whole process was pretty smooth. I learned that it’s best to check their rules, bring some ID. All in all, not a bad experience! Just another day of adulting, I guess.
