Okay, so I decided to tackle an 80s wrestler costume. I’ve always loved that over-the-top, colorful style, and I figured, why not give it a shot? It seemed like a fun project.

Getting Started: The Vision
First, I brainstormed. I mean, 80s wrestling is a broad category. I thought about Hulk Hogan, Randy “Macho Man” Savage, The Ultimate Warrior… so many iconic looks. I decided to go for a general “high-energy” vibe rather than copying one specific wrestler. This gave me more creative freedom, you know?
Gathering Supplies: The Hunt
Next, I raided my closet. I found some old, brightly colored leggings – score! Neon pink and electric blue. Perfect. I also dug out a plain white tank top. I knew I could customize that.
Then, a trip to the thrift store was in order. This is where the real treasure hunting began. I searched through racks of clothes, looking for anything that screamed “80s” and “wrestler.” I found a fringed, faux-leather vest – YES! It was a little big, but that’s easily fixed.
I also grabbed some cheap bandanas, some wristbands (sweatbands, actually, but they work!), and some iron-on letters. The iron-on letters were a last-minute find, and I’m so glad I got them.
Putting it Together: The Creation
Back home, the real fun began. I started with the tank top. Using fabric markers (another great thrift store find!), I drew some bold, jagged lines and shapes. Think lightning bolts and wild, abstract patterns. Nothing subtle here!

Then, I took the iron-on letters and spelled out “POWER” on the front of the vest. Simple, but effective. I could have gone with something more elaborate, but I liked the directness of it.
The vest was a little loose, so I used safety pins to take it in at the sides. Quick and dirty, but it worked perfectly. No sewing skills required!
I tied one bandana around my head, like a headband. I put on the wristbands, and I even found some old, chunky sneakers that kind of fit the look.
The Finishing Touches: The Attitude
- Leggings: Check.
- Customized Tank Top: Check.
- Fringed Vest: Check.
- Bandana and Wristbands: Check.
- Attitude: DOUBLE CHECK.
The most important part, of course, is the attitude. You gotta own it. I practiced some wrestling poses in the mirror – flexing, pointing, yelling. It was a little silly, but it definitely helped me get into character.
The whole thing came together pretty easily, and it was a lot of fun to make. And honestly, it looked pretty awesome. Mission accomplished!
