Hey everyone, it’s your boy back at it again with another deep dive into the stuff we love! Today, we’re talking about that awesome bird that gets us all hyped up during Eagles games – Swoop, the Philadelphia Eagles mascot!
So, I started by digging into how Swoop even became a thing. Turns out, back in the day, there was this intern, Jeff Alexander. This guy found an eagle suit and suggested to the big boss, Lurie, that they should make it a mascot. I guess the higher-ups were all about it because they launched a contest to name this new mascot. And boom, “Swoop” was born!
The Backstory
- Diving deeper, I learned Swoop’s got a whole backstory.
- This bird hatched in the Eagles Forest of Neshaminy State Park, a bald eagle.
- But get this, he had bad eyesight and wasn’t super strong.
- He did have a big, loyal heart.
- Then, some awesome Eagles fan gave him a jersey, and bam!
- Swoop gained this humanoid look, got super strong, and his vision became 20/20.
- Talk about a glow-up!
I also stumbled upon some fun facts. You know that NFL Shop commercial where some thief dressed as a kangaroo tries to steal Eagles jerseys? Well, Swoop makes a cameo there, busting the thief. How cool is that?
This whole mascot thing is pretty wild. I checked out other teams too. Like the Arizona Cardinals, their mascot, Big Red, debuted in 1998 and is like 100 years old. It is crazy.
But back to Swoop, finding out all this stuff made me appreciate our mascot even more. I mean, there’s a whole story there, a whole personality. And it is not just some random dude in a suit. It is Swoop, the heart and soul of the Eagles, soaring high and getting us all pumped up for the game.
