Well now, y’all, let me tell ya somethin’ about this golfer fella, Patrick Cantlay, and what happened with his caddie. It’s a real sad story, one of them things you can’t quite get outta your mind once ya hear it. See, back in 2016, Patrick and his caddie, Chris Roth, they were good friends. Real good friends, y’know? Had known each other since high school, and they was out in Newport Beach, California, just like they always did. Now, Chris was the kind of guy who was always there for Patrick, helping him out on the greens and carryin’ them heavy bags around, all through them long tournaments.
But one day, it all came crashin’ down. It was February 13th, a cold day, and ol’ Chris Roth was out walkin’ around, just mindin’ his business. And then, outta nowhere, a car hit him. I reckon it wasn’t even his fault, no sir, it was a hit-and-run, and the driver didn’t even stop to see if Chris was okay. They just sped off. Poor Chris was killed right there on the spot. That’s a thing that shakes ya to your core, don’t it? A man just tryin’ to live his life, and then he’s gone in an instant, all because of some coward in a car.
Well, that hit Patrick hard, real hard. I reckon if you’ve got a caddie who’s also your friend, who’s been with ya through thick and thin, it’s like losing a brother. So when the news came that Chris was gone, Patrick just couldn’t believe it. You see, back then, Patrick had already been dealin’ with his own troubles. He’d just found out he was gonna be out for the season due to an injury. And now, on top of that, he had to deal with the loss of his good friend.
But even with all that sorrow, Patrick didn’t forget his friend. He carried that grief with him, and at the Northern Trust Open that year, they did something real nice. All the players and caddies, they wore black ribbons to honor Chris Roth, so he wouldn’t be forgotten. It was a small gesture, but it meant a lot, to remember the man who’d been there, helpin’ Patrick through the highs and the lows of his career.
It’s one of them things that just makes ya think, don’t it? How quick life can change, and how sometimes, you don’t realize what you’ve got till it’s gone. Patrick, he’s moved on with his career, but I reckon he still thinks about his friend, every time he steps onto that green. And I reckon if Chris had been there, he would’ve been proud of what Patrick’s done since. Ain’t no doubt about it.
Now, not long after all this, Patrick was back out there on the course, tryin’ to find his way after everything that happened. But life had a funny way of throwin’ more troubles his way. See, while he was at the Colonial, he started feelin’ this sharp pain in his back, real bad. Hurt so much, he could barely move. Turned out it was a stress fracture in his L5 vertebrae. Now, that’s another thing to deal with, on top of everything else. But you know what? Patrick didn’t give up. He kept on, just like he always does. Even when it seems like the whole world is against ya, sometimes you gotta push through, even when it feels like ya can’t take no more.
And let me tell ya, folks, it ain’t just Patrick who’s been through the ringer. The whole golfing world has had its ups and downs, too. You remember the fuss they had over at the Ryder Cup, don’t ya? Some people was callin’ it ‘Hatgate,’ ‘cause of some story about Patrick not wearin’ his team hat unless they paid him. Now, I don’t know if that’s true or not, but what I do know is that there was a whole lotta drama, some ugly scenes, and even some arguments between players and caddies. It got so bad, they were practically fightin’ in the parking lot. It’s just a reminder that even in the fancy world of golf, things ain’t always as calm as they seem.
So, that’s the story of Patrick Cantlay and his caddie, Chris Roth. It’s a hard one, but it’s a reminder of how fragile life is and how we gotta appreciate the folks who are with us, helpin’ us along the way. And even when things seem like they’re at their worst, you gotta keep on goin’. For Chris, for the ones we love, and for ourselves.
