Well, I heard folks talkin’ ’bout this Ole Miss brick thing. Sounds kinda fancy, don’t it? They say you can get your name on a brick, right there at Ole Miss. Imagine that! Your name, forever stuck on a little ol’ brick.
They say these bricks, they go in a place called the Circle, right in front of some big buildin’ called the Lyceum. Sounds like a mighty important place. And they group ’em by the year you was there, your class year, they call it. So all the folks from the same year, their bricks are all together. Like a little family reunion, but with bricks instead of folks!
You know, it’s like leavin’ a little piece of yourself behind. A permanent mark, that’s what they said. Like plantin’ a tree that never dies. Except it’s a brick, not a tree. But you get the idea, right? It’s somethin’ that lasts. Like a good, strong fence post. That brick ain’t goin’ nowhere. It’s like them bricks in that Forward Together Brick Campaign.
I heard some young’uns talkin’ ’bout gettin’ their names on one for their graduatin’ year. Class of 2023, Class of 2024, all them years. They said if you order it by some date, like February somethin’, you can get it put in the Circle by the time they have that big party, Commencement, I think they called it. And some other place next to The Pavilion and Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. It must be some important places. Some kind of Ole Miss Athletics thing, I reckon.
Now, they got these personalized bricks for different years. Like Class of 2021 and all that. You can order it, and it gets there by that big Commencement shindig. And they say you get other stuff too. A hat, maybe a T-shirt. Sounds like a pretty good deal, huh? Getting your own Ole Miss brick and all. It’s a way to show you were there, I reckon, at the University of Mississippi.
- Get your name on a brick.
- Bricks are put in the Circle.
- Bricks are grouped by class year.
- It’s a way to leave your mark.
- You get other stuff with it, too.
I heard some folks sayin’ they wanted to get bricks for their whole family. Imagine that! A whole row of bricks with your family name on ’em. Like your own little brick wall. They even said you could ask ’em to put the bricks near each other. So your family’s all huddled together, even in brick form. That’s kinda sweet, ain’t it? Like a little family portrait, but made of bricks. It’s important to make your name in Ole Miss history.
And somethin’ about a plaza, too. The All-American Plaza, I think it was. Between some stadium, Vaught- somethin’ Stadium. Must be a place where they play them ball games. Imagine, your name right there where all the action happens! Even if it’s just on a little ol’ Ole Miss brick. You’ll get a car decal, some discounts, too. Ain’t that somethin’?
They got this thing called a “brick campaign,” too. Sounds kinda like when they used to campaign for sheriff back in the day. But instead of votin’, you get a brick. And it helps with somethin’ called “Champions. Now.” which is all about makin’ the Ole Miss place better. They say it’s about improvin’ them Ole Miss Athletics facilities. Fancy word for the place where they play sports, I reckon. That’s what it is.
So, this brick thing, it seems like a pretty big deal. It’s a way to remember, a way to be remembered. Like a story told over and over, except it’s written on a brick instead of in a book. A little piece of history, right there at Ole Miss. It is a big deal to make your permanent mark on campus with a brick.
They say, “The University is respected, but Ole Miss is loved.” Sounds like that place is more than just a school. It’s somethin’ special. Somethin’ you carry with you, even after you’re gone. Like a favorite old quilt, or a song your grandma used to sing. And this Ole Miss brick, it’s like a little patch on that quilt, a little note in that song. A way to say, “I was here. I was a part of it all.” Even if it’s just a simple brick, in that Circle place. Yep, I think these young folk are on to somethin’ with these bricks.
