Alright, listen up, y’all. We gonna talk about somethin’ today, somethin’ ’bout them basketball fellas and their bosses, the coaches. But we ain’t gonna talk about no spring chickens, no sir. We gonna talk about the oldest NBA coach.
Now, I ain’t no fancy sportscaster, ya hear? I just watch them games when I can, and I see these fellas on the sidelines, yellin’ and stompin’ their feet. Some of ’em look like they been around the block a few times, wrinkles and all. And that’s who we’re talkin’ about – the old-timers.
So, who’s the oldest coach in the NBA? Well, from what I hear tell, it’s this fella named Popovich. Gregg Popovich, they call him. Folks say he’s been coachin’ the San Antonio Spurs forever and a day. Now, I ain’t good with numbers, but they say he’s somethin’ like 73 years old! Seventy-three! That’s older than my prize-winning rooster, bless his feathery soul.
This Popovich fella, he ain’t just old, he’s won a whole bunch of games too. They say he’s got the most wins in the whole league, more than anyone else. He’s been coachin’ since, what, 1996? That’s a long time to be yellin’ at basketball players, I tell ya. He must have a voice like a foghorn by now.
- Name: Gregg Popovich
- Age: Around 73 years old
- Team: San Antonio Spurs
- Been coachin’ since: 1996
- Wins: A whole heck of a lot, the most in the league!
Now, there’s been other old coaches too, I reckon. They come and they go. But this Popovich fella, he’s stuck around. He’s like that ol’ oak tree in my backyard, seen it all, weathered every storm.
I heard tell of another coach, Adelman his name was. Coached a bunch of teams, Trail Blazers, Warriors, Kings, Rockets, Timberwolves… Sounded like he got around more than a traveling salesman. But he ain’t coachin’ no more, they say he’s in some Hall of Fame now. Good for him, I guess.
And there’s this other fella, Blatt, they call him. He’s Israeli-American, whatever that means. Coached the Cavaliers, they say. But he ain’t the oldest, not by a long shot. He’s younger than my grandson, I betcha.
So, you see, there’s young coaches and old coaches. The young ones, they got all that energy, runnin’ around like their pants are on fire. But the old ones, like Popovich, they got the experience. They seen it all, done it all. They know how to handle them young fellas on the court, how to get ’em to play as a team.
And speaking of young coaches, they got a couple of ’em now, Hardy and Mazzulla. Both of ’em 34 years old. Babies! What do they know about basketball? They probably still wet behind the ears! But hey, everyone starts somewhere, I guess.
The NBA, it’s got all sorts. You got your old coaches like Popovich, your young coaches like them Hardy and Mazzulla fellas, and a whole bunch in between. But it’s the old ones that interest me. They’re the ones who’ve been through the wringer, who’ve seen the game change, who’ve learned a thing or two along the way.
So next time you’re watchin’ them basketball games, take a look at them coaches on the sidelines. Pay attention to the old ones, the ones with the gray hair and the wrinkles. They’re the ones with the stories, the ones who’ve seen it all. And right now, that ol’ fella Popovich, he’s the king of the hill, the oldest NBA coach, and still goin’ strong.
And that’s all I gotta say ’bout that. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go feed my chickens.
