Y’all ever watch that movie, Here Comes the Boom? It’s about this fella, Scott Voss, a high school biology teacher who gets himself into the ring and fights to raise money to save the school’s music program. Now, if you liked that movie, you might be lookin’ for somethin’ else along them same lines, somethin’ funny with a little heart in it, and maybe even a few punches thrown. Well, I gotcha covered, I’ll tell ya about some movies that are kinda like Here Comes the Boom, and I reckon you’ll like ‘em just fine.
First off, you might wanna check out The Waterboy (1998). It’s got that same kinda heart, where a fella who’s a little out of place, well, he ends up findin’ himself on a football field. It’s funny, it’s got some action, and the main fella, Bobby Boucher, he’s got a lot of heart, just like Scott Voss in Here Comes the Boom. Bobby’s got his own struggles, but by the end of the movie, he’s right there, makin’ a big ol’ difference for his team. Same as Scott, really—he may not be a fighter at first, but he sure does put his heart into it, don’t he?
Next up, I’d say give Rocky (1976) a try. Now, I know, you might be thinkin’, “What’s that got to do with a school teacher?” Well, let me tell ya, it’s got a lot to do with the underdog story. Rocky Balboa ain’t nobody special at first—just a fella tryin’ to make a livin’—but he ends up fightin’ for somethin’ bigger than himself, just like Scott. Only difference is, Rocky’s fightin’ in the big leagues. But you’ll still see that same spirit of doin’ what it takes for the people you care about. If you’re lookin’ for a movie where the character finds strength they didn’t even know they had, this one’s your pick.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010) is another good one, though it ain’t got any fightin’ in it. But it’s about a kid who’s tryin’ to fit in and find his place in a big ol’ world. Just like Scott Voss, he’s got some struggles, and he ain’t exactly what folks expect him to be. But in the end, he finds out that bein’ yourself is the most important thing. If you liked the heart of Here Comes the Boom, you’ll find a lot of that same warmth in Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Now, I can’t forget about Grown Ups (2010). That movie’s got a whole bunch of funny folks in it, and it’s all about them old buddies gettin’ together, having a good time, and learnin’ a few lessons about life. It’s like one big ol’ reunion, with plenty of laughs, just like the kind of humor you’ll find in Here Comes the Boom. And there’s even a little bit of physical comedy in there, so if you liked the way Scott Voss fumbled his way through them fights, you might just get a kick out of this one too.
Then there’s The Pacifier (2005), starring Vin Diesel. Now, you wouldn’t think he’d be good for a comedy, right? But let me tell ya, he’s got some good ol’ laughs in this one. It’s about a Navy SEAL who’s gotta take care of a bunch of kids. Talk about out of his element, huh? But just like Scott, he ends up fightin’ for somethin’ bigger than himself. This movie’s got a good mix of action and heart, so it’s real close to the kind of feelin’ you get from Here Comes the Boom.
If you’re lookin’ for somethin’ with more fightin’ and less teachin’, well, you could try Recoil (2011) or The Tournament (2009). Now, these here movies are more on the action side of things, with plenty of punches and knockouts. But they still got that underdog feel to ‘em. In Recoil, a fella’s out for revenge, and in The Tournament, there’s a deadly competition. It ain’t exactly like Scott’s story, but if you liked the action in Here Comes the Boom, you might find yourself enjoyin’ these too.
So, there ya have it. A whole bunch of movies that’ll give you that same feel-good vibe as Here Comes the Boom, whether you want somethin’ with a little action, a little heart, or just a whole lotta laughs. You can find most of these movies on Netflix, Amazon, or iTunes, so grab some popcorn and get ready for a good time. Ain’t nothin’ better than watchin’ a feel-good movie when you need a good ol’ laugh, and these here picks will do just the trick.
