There’s even some folks out there that want to make the whole thing more high-tech, like using lasers or some automatic gadget to measure the distance. But that stuff’s too expensive and could cause a mess, so they stick with them old-fashioned poles. I reckon there’s something to be said about tradition, ain’t there?
So, you might be wonderin’, how much do these chain crew folks make? Well, let me tell ya, it’s no pocket change! A chain crew member in the NFL can earn around $187,000 a year. That’s right, almost $200,000 just to stand on the sideline and move some poles. If that don’t make you want to get out there with a flag and a pole, I don’t know what will! But it ain’t all about the money. It’s about tradition, about keepin’ the game fair, and helpin’ everyone know what’s goin’ on with the ball. So next time you’re watchin’ a game, don’t forget about them folks on the sideline. They’re doin’ important work, even if they don’t get the glory of the players out there on the field.
