Well now, if you’re wonderin’ how much them umpires make, let me tell ya, it ain’t a small amount! I heard tell that them Major League Baseball (MLB) umpires, the ones who stand behind the plate callin’ balls and strikes and keepin’ the game fair, they can make a pretty good livin’. On average, these umpires are pocketin’ around $235,000 a year in the 2023 season. But it ain’t all the same for everyone. If you’re just startin’ out, ya might only make about $150,000. Now, that’s not too shabby, but it’s not the big bucks either.
Now, don’t go thinkin’ that’s all they make, ‘cause it can go up, way up, depending on how long they been doin’ it. Some of the more experienced ones, especially them crew chiefs, are makin’ over $450,000. That’s a heap of money, don’t ya think? It’s all about your experience and where you’re workin’ too. The longer you’ve been at it, the more you earn. Just like anything else, it takes time to get to the top, and them big-name umpires, they been workin’ in the league for decades sometimes.
Now, I ain’t just talkin’ about the MLB, mind ya. Even if you ain’t in the Major Leagues, there’s money to be made in umpire jobs. Umpires in lower leagues like the Minor Leagues or even in the college games start off makin’ between $2,000 to $2,300 a month. And as they get more experience and move up the ranks, they can end up makin’ as much as $3,000 a month or even more.
There’s also bonuses to be had. Take the World Series for example. If you’re lucky enough to get the honor of officiating the big championship games, you can earn a nice bonus. Back in the day, some umpires were gettin’ $20,000 just for workin’ them World Series games. That’s a tidy sum just for a few days’ work! Of course, that was back in 2010, but I reckon it ain’t much different now.
And it ain’t just MLB umpires that make good money either. Folks in other big leagues like the ICC (International Cricket Council) make some pretty decent pay, too. Them umpires can earn anywhere from ₹66 lakh to ₹1.67 crore a year, with a good chunk of that comin’ from match fees and sponsorships. If you’re callin’ the shots in a Test match, you might be gettin’ ₹3.33 lakh for just one match! Now, that’s some serious dough if ya ask me.
But, hold on a minute, don’t go thinkin’ all of ’em are rakin’ in that kind of money. There’s some umpires who are just startin’ out, and they ain’t makin’ much. The average pay for a sports official in the U.S. is about $35,860 a year, which ain’t too bad, but it sure ain’t close to them high rollers at the top. Some folks just work part-time, too, and they get paid by the hour. From what I hear, that works out to about $26.75 an hour. So, even if you ain’t makin’ millions, you can still earn a decent living as an umpire, dependin’ on where you’re at and how long you’ve been doin’ it.
Now, as for the high-paid ones like Joe West, well, they’re a rare breed. Joe West had himself a nice career, workin’ for over 40 years in MLB, and when he retired in 2021, he was makin’ about $450,000 a year. That’s what you call a long, successful career in the umpire biz! And I reckon it ain’t too hard to see why he’s one of the highest-paid ones—they don’t just pay ya for callin’ balls and strikes, they pay ya for experience, leadership, and makin’ sure the game goes smoothly. Ya gotta be sharp and fair, and not every Tom, Dick, and Harry can do that job well.
So there ya have it, folks! Umpires can make a good bit of money, especially the ones at the top. If you’re just startin’ out, you might not make as much, but stick with it, and you could work your way up to some real good pay. And let me tell ya, it’s a job that sure has its perks, whether you’re workin’ in the MLB or some other league. And if you’re lucky enough to get a World Series gig, well, that’s like hittin’ the jackpot!
