Alright, listen up, y’all. We’re gonna talk about them Bears quarterbacks, the best they ever had. Now, I ain’t no fancy football expert, but I’ve seen my share of games, ya know? Been watchin’ them Bears since… well, since forever. And let me tell ya, it ain’t always been pretty.
The Bears and Their Quarterbacks, A Real Mixed Bag
The Bears, they got all this money and history, but quarterbacks? That’s a whole ‘nother story. Seems like they always struggle in that department. Can you believe it? They don’t even have a fella who’s thrown for 4,000 yards in a season. Not a single one! Other teams, they got guys slingin’ the ball all over the place, but not our Bears. Nope.
Now, some folks say we ain’t got a fancy list of quarterbacks like them other teams. And ya know what? They might be right. But we had some good ones, some tough fellas who gave it their all. So, let’s talk about ’em. Don’t expect no fancy stats or nothin’, just good ol’ fashioned talk about who could get the job done.
- Jim McMahon, The Punky QB
First off, gotta mention Jim McMahon. That boy was somethin’ else. A real wild card, that one. But he could play, ya know? He led us to that Super Bowl win back in ’85. That’s the only one we got, so that makes him special right there. He wasn’t always the most behaved fella, but he got the job done. Tough as nails, that one. And that’s what mattered, see? You don’t need no fancy pants quarterback, you need a fella who can win games.

Then there’s Sid Luckman. Now, I didn’t see him play live, but my grandpappy used to talk about him. Said he was a real tough fella, a leader. Played way back when, before all the fancy rules and helmets. Folks say he was one of the best, and I ain’t gonna argue with ‘em. He threw for a lot of yards back then, when throwing the ball wasn’t as common as it is today. They say he’s got a bunch of passing yards for the Bears, fourth most or something like that. He was from a different time, but he was good, real good.
- Erik Kramer, Almost 4,000 Yards
And then there’s Erik Kramer. He came along later. He’s the one who got closest to that 4,000-yard mark. Almost got there, but not quite. They say he threw for 3,838 yards in one season, back in ’95. That’s the most any Bears quarterback ever did. Imagine that! We’re talkin’ about all these years, and that’s the best we got. Still, gotta give the fella credit. He played hard.

Oh, and Jay Cutler. He’s got a bunch of spots on that single-season passing list, right after Kramer. Seems like he was always throwin’ the ball, but somethin’ was always missin’, ya know? He had the arm, that’s for sure, but winnin’ games? That was another story. He was a strong thrower, but sometimes he just made you scratch your head. He got close to that record a few times, but just couldn’t get over the hump.

Now, there was this fella named Rudy Bukich. Played way back when, in the fifties and sixties. He was before my time, but I heard he was pretty good. He’s gotta be on the list somewhere, just for being tough enough to play back then. Folks talk about him when they talk about the best, so he must have done somethin’ right. They had some good times with him, but he played in a time when people mostly ran the ball more than they threw it. Gotta respect that.
Waiting for the New Kid
So, there you have it. Some of the best Bears quarterbacks. Ain’t a perfect list, and maybe some folks will disagree, but that’s just how it is. Now, we got this new kid, Caleb Williams. Everyone’s hopin’ he’ll be the next great one. They picked him real high, so he better be good! He’s even going up against the Packers in his first game! We’ll see, won’t we? Maybe he’ll finally break that 4,000-yard thing. Maybe he’ll even get us another Super Bowl. One can hope, right?
But until then, we’ll just remember the fellas who gave it their all, even if they weren’t always the prettiest quarterbacks in the league. They were our quarterbacks, and that’s all that matters.
