Okay, so today I decided to dig into the stats from the Clippers vs. Suns game. I’ve been trying to get better at understanding basketball stats beyond just the final score, so this felt like a good exercise.

First, I needed to find the data. I just went to a popular sports website, you know, one of the big ones, and easily found the game’s box score. It had everything laid out—points, rebounds, assists, all that good stuff for each player.
Then I started going through it player by player. It was a bit overwhelming at first! So many numbers. I decided to focus on the key players from each team, the guys I knew were usually the big scorers or playmakers.
- I looked at points, of course. Who scored the most? Were there any surprises?
- Then I checked out rebounds. Who was dominating the boards? Did anyone have a surprisingly high or low number?
- Assists were next. Who was dishing out the most dimes? Was it the point guards, as expected, or did someone else step up?
- I also glanced at steals and blocks, just to see if anyone had a particularly good defensive game.
Diving Deep into individual players stats
I specifically paid attention to the shooting percentages. It’s one thing to score a lot of points, but were they efficient? Field goal percentage, three-point percentage—those numbers helped me see the bigger picture of a player’s performance.
It’s a lot to keep in mind like, I’m no expert, but it definitely gave me a better appreciation for how each player contributed (or didn’t!) to the game. It’s more than just looking at who won or lost. You can see who really impacted the game in different ways.
Doing this, I felt like I understand the game a little bit more and it all make sense.
