Alright, so I was digging around for some info on Byron Scott, you know, the former Lakers coach and player. I was particularly interested in learning more about his trade history, it’s pretty wild to see how many times a player can get moved around in the league.

So, I started my little research project by hitting up the usual spots. You know, just general web searches to get a feel for things.
Then I went a little deeper. I figured it would be best to look at his playing career first. I remembered he was a key part of the “Showtime” Lakers, so I knew he had to have some significant trade history.
Turns out, my hunch was right! I found out that he was initially drafted by the San Diego Clippers, but then – boom! – traded to the Lakers in 1983. Man, what a pivotal moment that was. That trade sent Norm Nixon to the Clippers and brought Byron and the draft rights of another player to LA. That Lakers team was already stacked, and adding Scott just made them even more of a force.
I kept digging and discovered that after a decade of success with the Lakers, Scott actually signed with the Indiana Pacers as a free agent in 1993. Ok, so not a trade, but still a big move!
But the trade machine wasn’t done with him yet! After a couple of years in Indiana, he was traded again, this time to the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1995. I mean, imagine going from the sunny beaches of LA to, well, Vancouver!
He played one season with the Grizzlies, and to finish his NBA career he was released and signed a contract with the Lakers again. After that, he went to play in Europe with the Greek team Panathinaikos. I’m not sure all the details about that move, probably some agent negotiations. But still not a “trade” as we think of it.
So, to recap, Byron Scott was involved in two major trades during his NBA career:
- 1983: Traded from the San Diego Clippers to the Los Angeles Lakers.
- 1995: Traded from the Indiana Pacers to the Vancouver Grizzlies.
It’s a fun journey!
It’s pretty cool to trace a player’s journey through the league like this. It really shows you the business side of basketball, and how quickly things can change for a player. It is also amazing what a simple search and reading can show you!
