Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get into this whole baseball stats thing for a while now. I watched the Yankees vs. Guardians game the other day, and I thought, “Why not use this as a chance to practice?” So, I grabbed my notepad and started jotting things down.
First off, I went online and looked up some basic info about the teams. Nothing fancy, just wanted to get a feel for their recent performance. I saw that the Guardians were doing pretty well in batting average and on-base percentage. That made sense, they did seem to be hitting the ball a lot during the game.
Then, I started focusing on the individual players. Every time a player came up to bat, I’d write down their name and what they did. Hits, runs, RBIs – the works. It was a bit messy, but hey, I was learning! I also made notes about any plays that really stood out to me. Like that amazing catch in the outfield or the double play that got everyone cheering. This part was actually pretty fun. I felt like a real sports analyst or something!
After the game, I took all my messy notes and tried to organize them. I grouped players from the same team together. Let’s be honest, it was a lot of scribbles, but it made sense to me.
Here’s what I ended up with, my super basic stats breakdown:
Yankees:
- Player A: 2 Hits, 1 Run
- Player B: 1 Hit, 1 RBI
- Player C: 0 Hits, but a killer defensive play in the 3rd inning!
- And so on…
Guardians:
- Player X: 3 Hits, 1 Run, 1 RBI
- Player Y: 2 Hits, 2 Runs
- Player Z: 1 Home Run! That was insane!
- And so on…
It’s nothing too fancy, just a simple record of what each player did during the game. But for me, it was a big step! I actually understand what those stats mean now and how they relate to what happened on the field.
This whole experience taught me that it’s one thing to watch a game, but it’s another thing to really try and understand what’s happening behind the scenes. I’m definitely going to keep doing this for other games. Maybe I’ll even get good at it someday. Who knows, maybe I’ll even start predicting game outcomes. Okay, maybe that’s a bit ambitious for now, but a guy can dream, right?
Anyway, that’s my little adventure into the world of baseball stats. Not exactly professional, but it’s a start. And I had fun doing it, which is what really matters.
