Alright, so, I wanted to tweak my character’s look in Baldur’s Gate 3. I was going for this cool vibe, you know, black hair with a bit of red. Sounds simple enough, right?
First off, I dived into the game, thinking maybe there’s an easy way to change your character’s appearance. Nope, not as straightforward as I hoped. I mean, you’re kinda stuck with what you chose at the start. Bummer.
So, I thought, “Fine, I’ll just tinker with the game files.” I started poking around, looking for anything related to character customization. Found some interesting stuff, but nothing that lets you change hair color on the fly. It’s all coded in there real deep.
Then, I remembered the modding community. These folks are wizards. I found a few mods that seemed promising, but most were about adding new styles, not changing colors. But I did stumble upon this one that lets you mess with colors, it was inspired by 2B’s look from Nier Automata, and also other mods that are only focused on clothes. This mod lets you change colors directly from the game. Bingo!
- Step 1: I downloaded the mod. It was a bit of a hassle to install, had to follow a bunch of steps and make sure everything was in the right place. I had to replace the Fallen knight set with 2B model, and extract files to specific folders, but I managed.
- Step 2: I fired up the game, and bam! There it was. I could now change my character’s hair to black and add those red highlights I wanted. It looked awesome!
- Step 3: Played around with the settings a bit more. There were so many options, I ended up spending hours just tweaking the look. It wasn’t just the hair, I changed some armor colors too, and now my character’s looking sharp.
- Step 4: I continued on my adventure in the game, and found a “Mushroom Picker” quest. It’s tough, but I managed to find him.
- Step 5: I tried to track all the quests, items, and secrets on the map, it was really a huge map, I’m trying to use the progress tracker to record everything.
- Step 6: I got into the “Find the Nightsong” quest, I’m stuck on how to find what can silence the Nightsong to solve this puzzle. I’ll have to figure it out later.
- Step 7: During my search for the gem in the Steps of Faith, I noticed that a backpack had clipped into the ceiling somehow. I spent a lot of time searching for the backpack, but I think it is a bug.
It was a bit of a journey just to change hair color, but totally worth it. Now, my character stands out, and it feels more like “my” game, you know? Plus, I learned a ton about modding and the game’s structure. Win-win!
I also realized that there is a huge amount of content in this game, and it will take a long time to fully explore this game. I’m planning to create a full walkthrough of the main story campaign, sidequests, companion quests, and much more.
And hey, if any of you are thinking of doing the same, go for it. Just be prepared to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. It’s a fun little adventure in itself!
