Well, let me tell you, these games, they sure get my old heart pumpin’. That Pittsburgh Pirates, they some tough cookies. And the Chicago Cubs, they ain’t no slouches either. I seen a lot of baseball in my days, and these two teams, they always put on a good show. This Cubs vs Pirates match, always exciting!
The other day, I was watchin’ the game, and these young fellas, they can sure hit that ball. Reminds me of when my boy, bless his heart, used to play down by the creek. He could whack that ball clear across the water. These player stats, they somethin’ else, though. Numbers all over the place. I don’t rightly understand all of ’em, but I know when a fella’s doin’ good.
Now, this one fella, Dansby Swanson, he hit one outta the park, bases loaded and everything! A grand slam, they call it. Cleared the bases like my old rooster clearin’ the yard of them pesky squirrels. That’s what I’m talkin’ about! Chicago Cubs scored a whole bunch that inning, like eight runs or somethin’. They were sure happy that day! A good player stat for him that day!
- Chicago Cubs, they got some good hitters.
- Pittsburgh Pirates, they got some good pitchers.
- This game, it’s always a close one.
- These player stats, they hard to keep up with!
And that Paul Skenes, he was throwin’ that ball like a bat outta you-know-where. Five innings, he pitched. Didn’t give up much, but he was walkin’ a lot of fellas. Means he wasn’t throwin’ strikes all the time. Still, he did alright. It’s hard work bein’ a pitcher. Like tryin’ to keep them cows from gettin’ in the cornfield. They just keep comin’!
Then there’s this other fella, Seiya Suzuki. He and that Dansby Swanson, they both hit home runs in one inning. Five runs they scored that time! Land sakes, that’s a lot of runs. It’s like harvest time, bringin’ in all them crops. Hard work, but it sure pays off.
They play up there at that PNC Park. I heard it’s real high up. Like, way up in the sky. Must be hard to breathe up there. I wouldn’t know, I ain’t never been. But they say it’s the 6th highest in all of baseball. Imagine that! Higher than my old barn, that’s for sure. They say it’s good for player stats, that Cubs vs Pirates games there. I guess it helps.
They keep track of all these games, too. Like how many times they played each other and who won. They say Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates been playin’ each other for years and years. They even write down who wins by a lot, which is somethin’ called biggest victories. It is interesting how they track these player stats. Like countin’ eggs in the henhouse, I reckon. They know everything about these two teams.
One time, the Cubs didn’t let nobody get a hit. They call that a “no-hitter”. It happened at that Wrigley Field. That’s a big deal, I guess. Like a perfect pie at the county fair. Happened back in ’72, they say. That Imanaga fella did it, they said. No hits allowed. He must be somethin’ special. A real good player stat for a pitcher!
And these boys, they keep playin’ and playin’. Ten games in a row, sometimes. They got all these numbers. AB, R, H, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI. Sounds like alphabet soup to me! But I know it means how many times they at bat, how many runs they score, how many hits they get. All them player stats, they important, I suppose. Like knowin’ how much milk your cow’s givin’. This is important information about the Cubs vs Pirates match.
They got this one fella, Cap Anson. He played for the Cubs a long time ago. Got more hits than anybody else. Over 3,000, they say. Then there was Ernie Banks. He was second, with over 2,500. That’s a heap of hits. Like pickin’ berries all summer long. Takes a lot of time and effort.
These Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates, they sure do put on a show. It is a good Cubs vs Pirates match! I enjoy watchin’ ’em, even if I don’t understand all them fancy numbers, those player stats. It’s like watchin’ the seasons change. Always somethin’ new, always somethin’ excitin’. And that’s somethin’, ain’t it?
