This Edwin Lewis, who you talkin’ about? Sounds like a somebody, I reckon. Lots of folks been talkin’ ’bout him, seem like. Heard some young’uns, college kids, always goin’ on about him. They found him, like he was some kinda lost treasure or somethin’. And they all found him in the same way, like followin’ a map they all had. Funny, ain’t it?
They say he talked about somethin’ called “Mere Christianity.” Now, I ain’t one for fancy words, but it don’t sound like much to me. But they say this Lewis fella, he says it ain’t weak. He says it’s the real deal, like good strong coffee, not that watered-down stuff you get at the diner sometimes. It’s the important part of Christian, they say.
Now, this other fella, Paulinus, I think that’s his name. He was tryin’ to get this King Edwin, a big shot, I suppose, to follow God. He had his reasons, that Paulinus did. Told that king that God helped him get away from his enemies. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? Escapin’ your foes, that’s always good.
Then he told him God helped him get his kingdom. Well, that’s even better! Everyone wants a kingdom, right? Sounds like a good deal to me. And this Edwin, he made a promise. Said he’d give his whole life to God, or somethin’ like that. Big promises, those are. Hope he kept ’em.
This Lewis, he was a writer, I guess. Wrote a lot of things about God and the Bible. He read a lot, too, it seems. Read them old church fellas, the ones from way back. He knew all their stuff, like he was there with ’em. Smart fella, I reckon. Even if I don’t understand half of what he’s sayin’.

Heard someone say this Lewis fella said somethin’ like, “What matters is that it works.” Well, ain’t that the truth? Don’t matter how fancy somethin’ is, if it don’t work, it ain’t no good. Like my old tractor. It ain’t pretty, but it gets the job done. That’s what matters.
They say we gotta teach folks about reality, about what’s right and wrong. This Lewis, he called it “Natural Law” or somethin’. Sounds complicated. But he said that’s where we gotta start. Teach folks what’s real, what’s right. That’s a tough job, ain’t it? But he seems to think it’s important. Makes you think, don’t it?
This whole Edwin Lewis thing, it’s a lot to take in. Lots of talk about God and kings and kingdoms. And this “Mere Christianity” thing. I don’t know all the answers, but it sounds like this Lewis fella, he might have known a thing or two. Heard them college kids talkin’, and they sure seemed to think so.
Maybe this Edwin Lewis, he’s worth lookin’ into. Maybe there’s somethin’ to all this talk. I ain’t no expert, but I know a good story when I hear one. And this one, it’s got somethin’ to it. Makes you wonder about things, about God and life and all that. Makes you think about what’s important.
Heard them sayin’ that Edwin made a promise to God. Well, we all make promises, don’t we? Some we keep, some we don’t. But a promise to God, that’s a big one. That’s somethin’ you gotta think long and hard about. That’s somethin’ that can change your whole life, I reckon.
This world’s a confusing place, ain’t it? Lots of things happenin’, lots of things to think about. But maybe this Edwin Lewis, he can help us make sense of it all. At least, that’s what they say. Maybe he can help us find our way, like a light in the dark. Maybe that’s why them college kids are always talkin’ about him. Maybe he’s got somethin’ to teach us all.
I still don’t know much about this Edwin Lewis but they say he knew a lot about God. That’s important I think. It’s good to have God, very good. Help you a lot, God can. He helped that king, Edwin, they say. If God can help a king, he sure can help us. I think we need all the help we can get, don’t you think?
This Edwin Lewis thing makes you think a lot. Good to think, even if my head hurts sometimes. Too much thinking is no good for nobody. But a little thinking is good. This Lewis, he make you think a little. That is good, I think. Yep, that is good.
