That Derek Shelton, he’s a name you hear ’round here a lot lately. He’s that baseball fella, you know. He’s been the big boss man for the Pittsburgh Pirates for a while now. They say he’s the 41st, whatever that means. Just means he’s in charge, I reckon. Some folks like him, some don’t. That’s just the way of the world, ain’t it?
He was born on July 30, someone told me. Don’t know what year, don’t much matter to me. He’s old enough to be in charge of a whole bunch of grown men playin’ a game, that’s for sure. And they say he ain’t goin’ nowhere, least not till 2025. He’s gonna be the boss man for a while longer, I guess. They call him the manager, Derek Shelton, Pirates Manager, that’s what they say.
Now, I hear some folks grumblin’. They say he ain’t doin’ a good job. They say the team ain’t winnin’ enough. I don’t know much about all that baseball stuff, but I know winnin’ is good and losin’ is bad. And they say the Pirates been doin’ more losin’ than winnin’. But that other fella, Ben Cherington, he says Derek Shelton is the right man for the job. He says he’s gonna keep him around. So, I guess we just gotta wait and see.
- He’s the 41st manager.
- He was born on July 30.
- He ain’t going nowhere till 2025.
- Some folks are not happy with the team’s performance.
- Ben Cherington said he thinks Derek is good for the job.
This Derek Shelton, he’s got a tough job, I reckon. Lots of folks watchin’ him, judgin’ him. Every move he makes, every game they play. It’s a lot of pressure. I wouldn’t want that job, no sir. Too much worryin’. I’d rather just sit on my porch and watch the birds. But some folks, they like that kind of thing. They like bein’ in charge, makin’ the big decisions.
I heard someone say he and another fella, Jim Leyland, they’re like two peas in a pod. They both were in charge of the Pirates. They both got that job first with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Derek Shelton, Jim Leyland, they are all part of the team’s history, I reckon. It’s all a big family, that baseball business. They got their own way of doin’ things, their own language. It’s all a bit confusin’ to me, but I guess it makes sense to them.
Some folks are sayin’ to put Derek Shelton out to pasture. They’re sayin’ it loud, too. But that other fella, what’s his name? Bob Nutting. He’s the real big boss, I guess. He’s the one who makes the final decisions. And he ain’t sayin’ nothin’ about gettin’ rid of Derek. So, I guess those folks who are complainin’ just gotta keep on waitin’.
This Ben Cherington fella, he’s sayin’ he expects Derek Shelton to be around in 2025. He’s callin’ him the “right person” for the job. Now, I don’t know what makes someone the “right person” for a job like that. But I guess he knows somethin’ we don’t. I heard the team lost a lot under Derek Shelton. They said it’s 288 wins and 404 loses. That is a lot of lose I think.
This whole baseball thing, it’s a big to-do. Lots of money involved, lots of people gettin’ all worked up about it. I guess it’s important to some folks. And that Derek Shelton, he’s right in the middle of it all. He’s the one they’re all talkin’ about. He’s the one they’re all watchin’.
I don’t know what the future holds for him. I don’t know if he’ll be around for a long time or if he’ll be gone tomorrow. That’s just the way it is in that business, I guess. One day you’re up, the next day you’re down. But for now, he’s still there. He’s still the boss man of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
And me? I’ll just keep on doin’ what I do. Sittin’ on my porch, watchin’ the world go by. And every now and then, I’ll hear that name, Derek Shelton, and I’ll think about all those folks gettin’ all worked up about a game. It’s a funny old world, ain’t it?
