Alright, let’s talk about this weight crossword thing, you know? My grandkids, they always playin’ games on them phones, always tappin’ and swipin’. But this one time, they showed me this word game, like a puzzle, they called it a crossword. Said it’s good for your brain, keeps you sharp. I thought, “Well, ain’t nothin’ sharper than my old kitchen knife, but alright, let’s see what this fuss is all about.”
First off, it’s all about words, ya know? Words about weight. Not the weight you carry on your shoulders after a long day of workin’ the fields, though that’s heavy enough, I tell ya. This is about like, pounds and ounces and stuff. They had these little boxes, goin’ across and goin’ down, and you gotta fill ‘em in with the right letters.
- Sometimes they ask you for a short word for heavy, that’s easy, right? Heavy, like a sack of potatoes after harvest.
- Then they ask you somethin’ fancy, like, “what’s that thing you use to measure flour when you’re bakin’ a cake?” And I’m thinkin’, “Well, I just use my ol’ scoop, but I guess they want that ‘scale’ word, or maybe ‘cup’.”
It’s kinda fun, I gotta admit. Like a little brain exercise. Gets you thinkin’ ‘bout things you don’t normally think about. You know, like those little weights they use at the market, the ones they put on the other side of the scale when you buyin’ vegetables? I never really thought about what they call those, but this crossword, it makes you think. They got names for everything, seems like. Makes you feel kinda smart when you get it right, even if it’s just a silly little word game.
The young’uns, they say this crossword stuff can make you smarter, help you remember things better. I don’t know about all that. I remember plenty just fine, thank you very much. I remember when this whole town was just a dirt road and a couple of houses. But I guess it can’t hurt, right? Keepin’ the mind busy. Keeps you from just sittin’ around watchin’ the grass grow, though sometimes that’s nice too.
I even tried makin’ one of these crosswords myself once. Found this thing on the internet, a “crossword maker” they called it. Took me a while to figure it out, all them buttons and whatnot. But I did it! I made a little puzzle about things you find on a farm. Chickens, tractors, hay… stuff like that. My grandkids thought it was the funniest thing, seein’ me doin’ something on the computer. They helped me print it out and then we all tried to solve it together. Took us a good long while, but we figured it out. It was fun, laughin’ and arguin’ about what the right answers were.
This weight crossword thing, it’s more than just a game, I guess. It’s about learnin’ new words, keepin’ your mind active, and spendin’ time with the young’uns. And that’s somethin’ worth more than all the gold in the world, ain’t it? It’s about family, and connection, and just havin’ a good time, even if it’s just by fillin’ in little boxes with letters. So next time them grandkids come over, I’ll be ready. I’ll have my pencil sharp and my brain ready to go, and we’ll tackle that weight crossword together. Maybe I’ll even let them win one, once in a while.
They say these games are good for kids too, help them learn words and stuff. Like, if they learn what “kilogram” means from the crossword, maybe they’ll be better at math in school. Or if they learn “obese,” maybe they’ll think twice before eatin’ that extra piece of cake. I don’t know, but it sounds good to me. Anything that helps them learn and grow is alright in my book. And heck, even for old folks like me, it keeps us from gettin’ too rusty, ya know? Keeps the gears turnin’ up there in the old noggin. So yeah, these crosswords, they’re alright. They’re more than just a game, they’re a way to keep the mind sharp, learn somethin’ new, and spend time with the ones you love. And that’s somethin’ I can get behind, any day of the week.
