Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this boxin’ thing in Israel, you know? It ain’t somethin’ I know a whole lot about, but I heard some things here and there. Folks over there, they like to punch and move around, just like anywhere else I reckon.
I heard tell there’s places, like gyms, where they teach you how to box. They call ’em “boxin’ gyms,” imagine that! Some of ’em are in big cities, like that Tel Aviv place. They got all sorts of names, like “Fearless Boxin’ Fitness” and another one, somethin’ about “Averb… Averb…” somethin’ or other. Sounds fancy, don’t it? They teach you all kinds of punchin’ and kickin’, not just boxin’ I hear. They got this “Brazilian Jew-Jitsu” too, and some Thai stuff. Sounds like a whole lotta huffin’ and puffin’ to me.
Now, these boxin’ places, they ain’t just for young fellas, no sirree. They got folks of all ages, learnin’ how to throw a punch. I guess it’s good for ya, gets your blood pumpin’ and all that. They teach you to run, and jump rope, and do all sorts of exercises. You gotta work your legs, your arms, and that middle part of your body, what they call the “core.” Lots of push-ups and sit-ups, just like them soldiers do, I bet.
- They got punchin’ bags, big ones and small ones.
- They teach you how to punch the air, they call it “shadow boxin’,” like you fightin’ a ghost or somethin’.
- And they got these things called “squats,” makes your legs burn, I tell ya.
And it ain’t just learnin’, they got fights too! I heard they had this one fight, with four Jewish boxers, all on the same night. In a place called Ashdod, must be a big deal. And they got another one comin’ up, in April, at some school on a mountain, “Isfiya” they call it. Folks like to watch, I guess. Reminds me of that movie, what was it called? Oh yeah, “Rocky.” That fella sure could punch.
Seems like there’s a lot of people interested in this boxin’ stuff in Israel. I saw somethin’ online, one of them boxin’ places had almost three thousand followers. That’s a lot of folks, more than in my whole town I reckon. They got coaches, and these fellas they call “promoters” who set up the fights. You gotta tell the promoter your age and how much you weigh, and how many times you fought before. It’s a whole business, this boxin’ thing.
There’s even this fella, from Nigeria or New Zealand or somewhere far away, he’s a famous fighter. Long name, somethin’ like “Israel… Israel…” somethin’ or other. He does all sorts of fightin’, not just boxin’, but kickin’ and wrestlin’ too. Guess he’s a big deal over there.
So, that’s what I know about boxin’ in Israel. It’s a lot of punchin’, and kickin’, and runnin’ around. Folks seem to like it, young and old. They got gyms and fights, and coaches and promoters. It’s a whole different world from what I know, but I guess it’s somethin’ people enjoy. Gets ’em movin’ and keeps ’em strong, I suppose. And that ain’t a bad thing, not a bad thing at all.
