Well, let me tell you somethin’ ’bout them Michigan basketball coaches, ya know, the fellas who yell at the boys runnin’ up and down the court. They got a whole bunch of ’em over the years, like, more than you can count on your fingers and toes, I reckon. Seventeen, they say. That’s a whole lotta fellas tellin’ young’uns what to do with a ball.
University of Michigan Basketball, that’s what they call it. Big fancy name for a bunch of boys throwin’ a ball around, if you ask me. But folks get all worked up about it, so it must be somethin’. They play in this place called Crisler Center. Sounds like a cracker, don’t it? But it ain’t. It’s named after some football coach, Fritz Crisler. Go figure. Football guy gettin’ his name on a basketball place.
Now, some of these coaches, they stick around for a while, some just a short spell. Like that fella, John Beilein. They say he won more games than any other coach there. Guess he knew a thing or two about gettin’ them boys to play right. He musta been a good one, ya know, to win all them games. Winningest coach, they call him. Fancy words for a fella who’s good at his job, I guess.
Then there’s this Steve Fisher fella. He took them Wolverines all the way to the big game, the Superdome, back in ’93. Played against them North Carolina Tar Heels. Big game, lots of hollerin’ and cheerin’, I bet. Don’t know who won, but it sounds important. Folks still talk about it, so it musta been somethin’ special. Coached them boys good, he did.
- Michigan Wolverines Basketball, they got a whole history, ya know? It ain’t just about this year or last year. It’s about all them years, all them coaches, all them players. It’s a whole lotta history.
- And they play in somethin’ called Division I. Sounds fancy, right? Like the best of the best, I guess. Top-notch, they say. Must be some good ball playin’ goin’ on there.
- They got this coach, Jim Harbaugh, no that’s not right, he’s the football fella… Let’s see… Ah, there was this fella, Juwan Howard. He coached for a spell, then got into some trouble, a fight or somethin’. They had to get another fella, Martelli, to take over for a bit. See, it’s always somethin’ with them coaches. One minute they’re there, the next they’re gone, or in trouble. Can’t keep up with ’em, I tell ya.
Speaking of coaches comin’ and goin’, there was this other fella who coached them Wolverines, then went off to coach the San Francisco 49ers, another football team, and then Stanford University. He bounced around like a ball, that one. Can’t remember his name, but he sure got around. Guess some folks just can’t sit still.
So, that’s the story of them Michigan Basketball Head Coaches, or at least some of it. A whole bunch of fellas, some good, some not so good, all tryin’ to get them boys to win games. It’s a complicated thing, this basketball, but it seems to make folks happy, so I guess it ain’t so bad. And that Crisler Center, that’s where they do it all, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Fancy place, fancy name, fancy game. But at the end of the day, it’s just boys and a ball, and a coach yellin’ at ’em.
College basketball, that’s what they call it. Keeps them young fellas busy and out of trouble, mostly. Gives folks somethin’ to cheer about, I reckon. And them coaches, well, they’re the ones makin’ it all happen, good or bad. Seventeen of ‘em, that’s a lot. Wonder who’ll be next. Always changin’, always somethin’ new. That’s life, I guess, even in basketball.
