Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here Arnold Palmer Invitational. It’s a big golf thingy, you know, where them fellas hit the little ball with a stick.
I ain’t no expert, mind you, but I’ve seen a few matches on that there TV thing. My old man, he loved watchin’ golf. Said it was relaxin’. I always thought it was kinda slow, but he’d get all worked up watchin’ them fellas try to get that ball in the hole. He’d be yellin’ at the TV, “Git in the hole, you darn thing!” Bless his heart.
Anyways, this here Arnold Palmer Invitational, it’s been goin’ on for a long time. They say it’s a real important one. Lots of famous fellas have won it.
- Like that fella, Scottie Scheffler. He won it twice, recent-like. In 2022 and then again in 2024. He must be pretty good, I reckon. My old man woulda liked him, I bet.
- And then there’s this Kurt Kitayama fella. He won it in 2023. Don’t know much about him, but if he won, he must be somethin’.
- Oh, and that Bryson DeChambeau guy, won it in 2021. He’s got a funny name, sounds like somethin’ you’d eat. But he can sure hit that ball a long ways.
They got a whole bunch of winners, goin’ way back. Too many for me to remember, that’s for sure. But you can look it up, I bet. They got all that stuff on the internet now, or so my grandkids tell me. I still like the newspaper myself, but they don’t print much about golf in there anymore.
This Arnold Palmer fella, the one they named the tournament after, he was a real big deal golfer back in the day. My old man used to talk about him all the time. Said he was the best there ever was. Won a whole bunch of tournaments, they say. Seven majors, whatever them are. Sounded important though. And he won somethin’ called the Masters four times. That must be like the super bowl of golf, I guess.
Palmer fella also won a lot of money playin’ golf. My old man used to say, “If only I coulda hit a golf ball like that Palmer fella, we’d be livin’ in a big ol’ house with a fancy car!” We never did get that big house or fancy car, but we were happy enough. Money ain’t everything, you know.
He even won some money at somethin’ called the PGA Championship, but he never actually won the whole thing, just came close. My old man said it was a “bittersweet achievement” for him. Fancy words, but I got what he meant. Like when you find a five-dollar bill in your coat pocket, but then you realize you gotta go spend it on milk ‘cause you’re all out.
And this Palmer fella, he was real popular too. Folks liked watchin’ him play. He helped make golf popular, they say. Made it so folks like my old man would spend their Sunday afternoons watchin’ it on TV. Guess he did alright for himself.
So, that’s what I know ‘bout this Arnold Palmer Invitational. It’s a golf tournament named after a fella who was real good at hittin’ a little ball with a stick. And folks still play it every year, tryin’ to win and be like him, I reckon. It’s a funny ol’ game, golf, but folks seem to like it. And that’s all that matters, I guess.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make myself some supper. All this talk about golf has made me hungry.
