Okay, so I decided to tackle this “Wally the Green Monster” costume thing. I’d seen some pictures online, and it looked… interesting. My kid’s a huge baseball fan, so I figured, why not? Let’s do this.

First, I gathered all my junk. I mean, materials. I hit up a few stores. I grabbed:
- A big, green, fuzzy blanket. Think oversized Snuggie.
- Some white felt.
- Orange ping pong balls.
- A baseball cap, also green.
- Needle and thread, strong stuff.
- Hot glue gun, because who has time to sew everything?
Getting Started
I started with the blanket. I basically draped it over my kid to get a rough idea of the size. It was way too big, which was good. More room for error, you know? I cut off the excess, leaving enough to make a hood and have it go down to about his knees.
Then, I sewed the sides together, leaving armholes. Honestly, my sewing skills are, shall we say, “rustic.” But hey, it’s a monster costume, it doesn’t need to be perfect. I reinforced some spots with the hot glue gun, just to be sure.
Making the Face
This was the fun part. I cut out two big circles from the white felt for the eyes. Then, I took those ping pong balls and drew pupils on them with a Sharpie. Pretty simple, right? I hot-glued the felt circles onto the hood, and then glued the ping pong balls on top. Instant googly eyes!
For Wally’s weird nose, I cut out a sort of rounded triangle from some leftover green blanket scraps. I stuffed it with a little bit of extra fabric to give it some shape, and then sewed it onto the hood, right between the eyes.

Finishing Touches
I took the green baseball cap and hot-glued it to the top of the hood. This was surprisingly sturdy. I figured it added to the whole “baseball mascot” vibe.
Finally, I had my kid try it on. We made a few adjustments, trimming some edges, adding a bit more hot glue here and there. And that was it! One Wally the Green Monster costume, ready to go.
It wasn’t perfect, not by a long shot. But my kid loved it, and that’s all that really matters. Plus, I got to use up a bunch of old stuff I had lying around. Win-win!
