Okay, so I got curious the other day about how tall the average running back in the NFL is. I mean, you see these guys on TV, and some look like absolute tanks, while others are more, shall we say, compact. So, I decided to do a little digging.

My Deep Dive into NFL Running Back Heights
First, I headed over to the official NFL website. I figured they’d have all the player stats, including height. I started browsing through the team rosters, jotting down the heights of all the running backs I could find. It was a bit tedious, clicking through each team and then each player profile, but hey, I was on a mission!
After I gathered a good chunk of data from the NFL site, I thought, “Why not check out some other sports sites too?” So I popped over to some other websites and did some more searching. I found some articles and lists that already had some of this info compiled, which was super helpful.
Once I felt like I had a pretty solid dataset (like, way more names and numbers than I ever thought I’d collect), I dumped everything into a spreadsheet. I’m no spreadsheet whiz, but I know how to use the “average” function. So I set that up, hit enter, and boom – there it was!
- The range of heights was pretty wide like between 5’6 to 6’3.
I did find that, that the average height for an NFL running back is right around 5’11”. Give or take an inch, of course, depending on who you include in the mix.
So, that’s the story of how I spent my afternoon figuring out the average height of NFL running backs. It might not be groundbreaking research, but it was fun to satisfy my curiosity.
